PhD scholars protest in Srinagar over delayed fellowship payments

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, as a mark of growing frustration among employees and the general public, PhD scholars staged a protest in Srinagar against the delay in the release of their fellowships for the past three months.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the scholars at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) carrying placards with “Release our Fellowships” message gathered at the main gate and raised slogans against the administration.

The protesting scholars said that the delay in receiving fellowships has caused severe financial hardships. “We have been waiting for our fellowships for three months. It has become extremely difficult to manage daily expenses,” one said a scholar present among the protesters.

“Some scholars have even been forced to vacate their rented rooms due to non-payment of rent. Landlords are unwilling to wait any longer,” another scholar complained, adding that “the NIT administration is not serious about the issue.”

The scholars also raised concerns over the absence of a permanent director at NIT Srinagar.
