Tension grips as Hindutva extremists vandalise Muslim shrine in UP
New Delhi: In what Muslims believe to be a deliberate attempt to provoke violence against the community under the BJP regime, armed members of Hindutva organisations vandalised a decades-old Muslim shrine in Fatehpur district of Uttar Pradesh, India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the shrine of Nawab Abdus Samad, located in Abu Nagar, Rediya locality of Sadar tehsil, was stormed by a mob waving saffron flags, chanting Hindutva slogans, and carrying hammers and iron rods. Eyewitnesses said the attackers smashed the boundary wall, broke iron railings, and desecrated the tomb before fleeing.
The vandalised shrine, officially recorded under Khasra Number 753 as Maqbara Mangi and listed as national property, is over 150 years old and has long been revered by both Muslims and Hindus. However, Hindutva outfits including the Bajrang Dal, Vishwa Hindu Parishad, and BJP-linked groups have claimed the site is an ancient Hindu temple, vowing to perform rituals there.
Local Muslims have condemned the attack, calling it a targeted assault. “They knew this was a sacred place and chose this moment to strike,” said a community elder.
Following the attack, large crowds gathered at the site demanding strict action.
Political parties including the Samajwadi Party and Congress have denounced the incident, accusing the ruling BJP of emboldening extremist elements and shielding those responsible for communal violence.
