Islamabad: The people of Pakistan and Kashmir today are observing Junagarh Black Day to condemn India’s forcible occupation of the Muslim-ruled Junagarh State on 9 November 1947, in blatant violation of international law and the partition plan.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Junagarh’s ruler, Nawab Mahabat Khan, had signed an Instrument of Accession with Pakistan on 15 September 1947, fulfilling both legal and moral requirements for the state’s inclusion in Pakistan. However, India landed its troops and occupied Junagarh through sheer aggression, disregarding the will of its Muslim-majority population and the principles of justice and self-determination.
Speakers and political analysts reiterated that Pakistan has a rightful claim on Junagarh based on a legitimate accession, and emphasized that only the people of Junagarh have the right to decide their political future. They said India’s illegal control over Junagarh mirrors its occupation of Jammu and Kashmir, both representing violations of the partition formula and international commitments.
They reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to continue its diplomatic and moral efforts for the liberation of both Kashmir and Junagarh from Indian illegal occupation, urging the United Nations and world community to play their role in ensuring justice and self-determination for the oppressed people of these territories.
