South Africa seminars spotlight atrocities in IIOJK, call for sanctions against India

Cape Town: A number of seminars, titled the “Nelson Mandela Kashmir–Africa Peace Conference,” were held across South Africa, highlighting the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K).

According to Kashmir Media Service, the events took place ahead of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s participation in the G20 Summit in Johannesburg on November 22–23, 2025.

Organized jointly by the South Africa Kashmir Action Group (SAKAG), Kashmir Global Movement, and Pakistani associations, the seminars brought together local and international human rights activists to draw attention to grave human rights violations in IIOJK. Participants strongly condemned atrocities committed by Indian authorities and voiced unwavering support for the Kashmiri people’s right to self-determination.

During the events, resolutions were passed calling on the South African government to restrict relations with India, impose sanctions, refrain from hosting Indian Prime Minister Modi at the G20, and initiate legal proceedings against alleged war crimes.

Earlier, on November 17, Salman Khan, Chairman of SAKAG, in collaboration with the Muslim Lawyers Association (MLA), formally filed a criminal complaint with South African authorities against Modi, holding him accountable for violations of human rights and international law in occupied Jammu & Kashmir. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed receipt of the complaint.

The organizing groups emphasized that South Africa has a historic and legal responsibility to uphold justice for the oppressed Kashmiri people and respect international law. Human rights organizations, legal associations, local communities, and overseas Pakistani groups have also called for nationwide protests in support of Kashmiris and their legitimate right to self-determination during Indian PM Modi’s visit.
