Tributes paid to Prof Nazir Shawl on 2nd death anniversary

Islamabad: Speakers at a webinar paid glowing tributes to the late Kashmiri intellectual, Professor Nazir Ahmed Shawl, an eminent educationist, author, journalist, poet, and human rights defender, remembering him as a towering intellectual and steadfast advocate of the Kashmir cause.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Prof Shawl passed away on the intervening night of December 29-30, 2023 in London. The webinar, organised by the United Kashmir Journalists Association (UKJA) and moderated by senior journalist Dr. M. Ashraf Wani, highlighted his lifelong struggle, scholarship, and diplomacy that left a profound imprint nationally and internationally.

Senior APHC leader Muhammad Farooq Rehmani praised Prof Shawl’s courage and consistency, noting that he remained dedicated to the Kashmir cause even during ill health. Executive Director of the International Council for Human Rights Kashmir Centre (ICHRKC), Abdul Majeed Tramboo, described him as an exceptional personality whose advocacy and diplomacy were unparalleled, highlighting his role in establishing a global consultative group for Kashmir.

Former Ameer-e-Jamaat-e-Islami AJK Abdul Rashid Turabi called Prof Shawl a principled leader who shaped credible narratives on Kashmir. KIIR Chairman Altaf Hussain Wani remembered him as a distinguished scholar whose books and poetry reflected the pain and resilience of Kashmiris. APHC leaders Shamim Shawl and Mushtaq Hussain Gilani, along with human rights activist Raies Ahmed Mir, praised his patriotism, foresight, and unwavering dedication to amplifying the voice of oppressed Kashmiris.

The webinar concluded with special prayers for the departed leader, invoking blessings for the elevation of his ranks in Jannah.
