Two Indian policemen shot dead in Gurdaspur, Punjab

Chandigarh: Two Indian policemen, including an Assistant Sub-Inspector, were shot dead in Gurdaspur district near the international border. The deceased were identified as ASI Gurnam Singh and Home Guard Ashok Kumar.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the two officials appeared to have been shot while asleep at a checkpost in Adhian village under Dorangla police station, suggesting a targeted attack. Senior police officers, including DIG Border Sandeep Goel and DGP Gaurav Yadav, visited the site as the area was sealed and security tightened. Authorities confirmed that both men died of gunshot wounds, while investigations are underway from multiple angles.

Later, social media posts purportedly issued by a little-known outfit calling itself Tehreek-e-Taliban Hindustan claimed responsibility for the killings. However, senior police officials stated that the group has no known presence in Punjab or elsewhere in India and described the claims as unverified and possibly diversionary.

Analysts say New Delhi has frequently sought to place onus across the border to deflect attention from internal security lapses and institutional inefficiencies.
