Leh to witness protests on Thursday to press for political rights

Leh: The Leh Apex Body (LAB) has announced that it will resume protests across Leh, Ladakh on March 12 to press for its long-pending political and constitutional demands, just days before the swearing-in of the newly appointed Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the announcement was made by LAB co-convenor and former minister Chering Dorjay Lakrook, who said peaceful demonstrations would be held in different parts of Leh district to highlight the concerns of the people of Ladakh and demand the fulfillment of their aspirations.
Lakrook said the protests would also call for the release of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, whose arrest last year sparked widespread demonstrations in Ladakh. He reiterated that Ladakhi groups are seeking political rights under the Sixth Schedule and political representation.
“The people of Ladakh have been raising these issues for a long time, and the peaceful protest on March 12 will once again underline the need for safeguards to protect the region’s land, culture and employment opportunities,” Lakrook said.
