Dalit family assaulted over forced temple donation in Madhya Pradesh
Incident exposes deep-rooted caste-based coercion in India

Bhopal: In an incident reflecting entrenched caste-based coercion in India, a Dalit family in Madhya Pradesh was brutally assaulted after failing to meet a demand for wheat as a donation to a village temple.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident took place in Maharajganj village of Chhatarpur district, where members of the family said a group of men arrived at their home demanding a fixed quantity of wheat in the name of a temple contribution. When the family expressed inability to comply due to financial constraints, the situation escalated into violence.
The victims said that they were verbally abused, dragged out of their house, and beaten with sticks, rods, bricks, and stones. Women and children were also subjected to violence during the attack. At least five members of the family were injured and later taken for medical treatment.
The family said they had already contributed what they could afford, but the demand far exceeded their means. They questioned how they would feed their children if they handed over their remaining wheat, underlining the economic vulnerability of Dalit households in rural India.
A video of the incident has surfaced on social media, showing scenes of the assault. The visuals have intensified scrutiny of caste dynamics in India, where marginalized communities frequently face pressure from dominant social groups.
The victims have named several individuals as attackers and said that their remaining wheat was forcibly taken away after the assault. They also questioned why authorities have not seized the vehicle used to transport the grain.
