Indian Army Colonel arrested in bribery case amid rising corruption in forces

New Delhi : Amid increasing corruption among forces in India, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Indian Army Colonel in BJP-ruled West Bengal.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the CBI arrested Colonel Himanshu Bali, posted with the Army Ordnance Corps under the Eastern Command in Kolkata, in connection with an alleged Rs 50 lakh bribery case. The officer was arrested on May 18 in Kolkata and is being brought to Delhi, official sources told media persons. Bali is accused of favouring a Kanpur-based company by allegedly manipulating the award of tenders, approving substandard samples, and facilitating the clearance of pending and inflated bills.
In its FIR registered on May 18, the CBI alleged that the colonel had contacted the industrialist over the pending bribe payment, to which the businessman cited cash constraints.According to the FIR, the officer later contacted the industrialist’s driver and allegedly asked him to deliver the payment to one of his associates. The pending bribe amount of Rs 50 lakh was allegedly to be routed through hawala channels.
The CBI arrested the colonel after registering a case against him and the private contractor in the alleged bribery case, officials said.
