Moment of silence in Canadian parliament to mark one year of Nijjar’s targeted killing
Ottawa: The Canadian Parliament observed a moment of silence to mark the one-year anniversary of the targeted killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian national and leader of Sikhs for Justice, was shot dead by Indian RAW agents in disguise outside a Gurudwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18, 2023.
On 18 September, the same year, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau claimed in the country’s parliament that, based upon the credible intelligence collected by the Canadian Government, Nijjar was assassinated by Indian government agents. This bombshell revelation strained relations between Canada and India, with Trudeau calling for accountability from New Delhi.
Nijjar was a well-known advocate for Sikh rights and had been living in Canada since 1997. His killing had sent shockwaves through the Sikh community, and the revelation of Indian government’s involvement sparked outrage and demands for justice. Four Indian nationals have been accused of his murder by the Canadian authorities.
The moment of silence in the House of Commons was a tribute to Nijjar’s memory and a call for justice for his killing. The incident has highlighted concerns about Indian government’s targeting of Sikh activists abroad.
