Tension in Dharavi as residents protest BMC’s plan to demolish mosque

Mumbai: Tension gripped Dharavi, Maharashtra state of India, on Saturday after hundreds of residents gathered on the streets to protest against the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s (BMC) plan to demolish a mosque.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in response, a large police force was deployed to maintain order and prevent any incidents, an official said.

“A team from BMC’s G-North ward arrived at 90 Feet Road in Dharavi around 9:00am to demolish the Mehboob-e-Subhani mosque. However, local residents quickly assembled and blocked the officials from accessing the lane where the mosque is situated,” the police official explained.

Additionally, hundreds of protesters gathered outside the Dharavi police station and staged a sit-in, opposing the civic body’s action. The situation is under control, the official noted.

Talks are underway between representatives from the mosque, BMC officials, and the Dharavi police in an effort to resolve the dispute, he added.
