Evicted Assamese Muslims face voter roll deletion in Dhubri crackdown
New Delhi: In Assam’s Dhubri district, East Bengal–origin Muslim families faced a two-step purge — first mass evictions, then deletion from electoral rolls.
According to Kashmir Media Service on July 8, authorities demolished over 2,000 homes in Charuabakhra village under a “land jihad” pretext.
Days later, residents like brick kiln worker Taher Ali received Election Commission notices (Form 7) seeking removal of their names from voter lists, echoing CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s public statement that those evicted would also be disenfranchised.
Many victims, settled there for decades, report irregularities in promised compensation, mismatched cheque details, and inflated official eviction counts.
Locals say the drive targets Bengali-speaking Muslims under the guise of protecting “jati, mati, bheti” (race, land, homeland), leaving thousands stateless and without shelter.
