Srinagar NIA court issues proclamation against three Kashmiris over social media activity

Srinagar: In yet another instance of digital repression in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Srinagar has issued a proclamation against three Kashmiris, including a woman, for their social media activity.

According to Kashmir Media Service, those named in the proclamation are businessman Mubeen Ahmad Shah of Jawahar Nagar, Srinagar; architect Azizul Hassan Ashai, a resident of the same locality; and woman activist Rifat Wani, of Trehgam, Kupwara. They are accused of using social media to spread disaffection against India. Officials claimed the proclamation proceedings were initiated after repeated attempts to secure their presence proved unsuccessful.

The Special NIA Court in Srinagar declared the three as proclaimed offenders in connection with a fake case registered at Police Station Counter Intelligence Kashmir. The FIR invokes various sections the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Indian Penal Code (IPC).

The court directed the trio to appear before it by January 31, 2026, and warned that failure to comply would invite further coercive measures, including attachment of property.

According to the charge sheet filed by Counter Intelligence Kashmir (CIK), the trio allegedly ran a coordinated campaign on social media platforms including Facebook, X, and WhatsApp. The authorities claim that the content shared by them was aimed at inciting street violence, disrupting normal life, damaging public property and disturbing public order in IIOJK.

Notably, Indian authorities frequently cite vague “security concerns” and alleged online activity to detain Kashmiris and spread fear across the occupied territory. These actions are widely viewed as part of an ongoing effort by the occupation authorities to suppress the Kashmiris demand for their inalienable right to self-determination, a right recognized by UN resolutions.
