Modi avoids free press, relies on teleprompter-controlled narratives: report

New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi avoids facing the free press and relies heavily on teleprompters, while continuing to restrict media freedom and turning the mainstream “Godi media” into a tool of state propaganda.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Indian news portal The Wire has exposed the role of biased mainstream media operating under Modi’s influence. The report said Modi has cultivated a media ecosystem that avoids accountability and criticism, instead amplifying the government’s narrative as unquestionable truth.

It added that major issues, including paper leaks and even remarks by the Indian Supreme Court likening youth to “cockroaches,” received little or no critical media scrutiny and failed to reach Modi’s ears. Modi, it said, continues to avoid press conferences where difficult and fact-based questions could be raised.

Questions related to the RSS vision of a “Hindu Rashtra” and its constitutional implications are also reportedly excluded from mainstream debate. The report further said the Indian media avoids scrutiny of why business tycoon Adani is treated as untouchable or why the government’s policy shifts on Russian oil imports remain unchallenged.

Experts noted that Modi’s refusal to engage with independent media during recent international visits has also drawn criticism from global observers. India’s so-called hollow democracy, they said, has been fully exposed before the world through Modi’s Zionist-style politics.
