BJP govt marginalizing southern states through proposed delimitation in India

New Delhi: Political tensions are mounting in India over a proposed constitutional amendment and fresh delimitation plans, amid growing concerns that the BJP-led Indian government is seeking to shift political power toward northern states while politically marginalizing the country’s southern regions.
According to Kashmir Media Service, political observers say people in southern India are expressing serious reservations about the proposes census and delimitation exercise, fearing it could reduce their parliamentary representation and pave the way for the imposition of northern cultural dominance.
Observers say the southern states are effectively being punished despite their better performance in economic development, population control, and social indicators. They warn that while the politically influential but less-developed northern states are likely to gain greater representation, the move could significantly weaken the political voice of the south and strengthen the BJP’s electoral advantage.
Analysts argue that the BJP-led government, which derives much of its political support from Hindi-speaking northern regions, is using delimitation as a tool to consolidate power in the north while penalizing southern states for not backing the party politically.
They warned that a systematic effort is underway to suppress the political influence of of southern India, describing the delimitation exercise as a political maneuver designed to preserve northern dominance and permanently reduce the south’s role in national decision-making.
Observers also pointed to the BJP’s silence over southern concerns, contrasted with its responsiveness to northern demands, as further evidence of attempts to diminish the political weight of the southern states.
They said the broader agenda is also reflected in efforts to impose the Hindi, centralize the education system, and push electoral changes that promote cultural and political supremacy.
Political experts warned that India’s federal structure is facing increasing strain, with the BJP government attempting to erode the autonomy of southern states and bring them under greater northern political and cultural dominance.
