Gupkar alliance supports farmers’ strike for tomorrow, slams Delhi’s handling
Srinagar: The People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration (PAGD) has announced its support for the nationwide farmers’ strike scheduled for tomorrow, criticizing the handling of the issue by the BJP-led Indian government.
According to Kashmir Media Service, PAGD, a coalition of five political parties in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, including the National Conference and the People’s Democratic Party, has declared its backing for the ‘Gramin Bharat Bandh’, called by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, tomorrow.
In a statement issued by senior CPI-M leader and PAGD spokesperson M Y Tarigami, the alliance emphasized the legitimacy of the farmers’ demands, including a law ensuring minimum support prices for agricultural produce and the strengthening of welfare schemes such as the MGNREGA.
Tarigami lashed out at the Indian government for resorting to authoritarian tactics instead of engaging in constructive dialogue with the protesting farmers. He criticized the Modi government’s failure to fulfill promises made to the farmers and accused it of prioritizing the interests of corporate capitalists over those of ordinary citizens.
The statement highlighted concerns over rising unemployment, inflation and the privatization of public sector assets under the current administration.
PAGD reiterated its commitment to advocating for the rights and interests of farmers and workers, emphasizing the need for meaningful reforms to address the challenges faced by ordinary citizens.
