One killed, two injured in Manipur blast

Imphal: One person was killed and two others were injured in a blast in violence-hit Manipur state of India.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the blast, suspected to be caused by an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), occurred outside the DM College, close to the office of the All Manipur Students Union (AMSU) in Thangmeiband area of Imphal West.

The deceased person has been identified as 24-year-old Oinam Kenegy. Among the two injured, the condition of one is stated to be critical. Both the injured have been admitted to a hospital in the city.

Meanwhile, unidentified individuals set fire to the office of civil society organization United Committee Manipur (UCM) in Lamphelpat, Imphal West district.

In another incident, unidentified people damaged and set fire to the administrative section of a school in Imphal East district early Saturday morning, resulting in the destruction of a parked vehicle on the premises.

Manipur has been grappling with the repercussions of an ongoing violence that erupted in May last year. More than 200 people, mostly from the minority Christian Kuki community, have so far been killed in the violence that began following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized by the Kuki community in the state’s hill districts, protesting against the Hindu dominated Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
