Protesters block Srinagar-Baramulla highway in protest against authorities

Srinagar: A protest demonstration erupted in Mirgund, North Kashmir, as scores of residents blocked the Srinagar-Baramulla highway to demand action on the severe water scarcity issue plaguing the area.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the demonstrators, including men and women, brought traffic to a standstill, venting their frustration over the lack of drinking water in their area. Despite repeated pleas to the authorities, the issue had gone unaddressed, prompting them to take drastic action.

“We have been facing immense hardships due to the shortage of drinking water. Our pleas to redress the water shortage have fallen flat on deaf ears,” protesters told reporters.

The protesters demanded that the Jal Shakti Department, responsible for water supply, either fix the water pipes or send tankers to their areas. “If the Jal Shakti Department cannot provide us with drinking water through water pipes, they can send tankers to our areas,” they said.

The standoff continued until Deputy Superintendent of Police Pattan and other officials arrived at the scene. The protesters dispersed only after they assured them that their concerns would be addressed.
