‘577 Indian paramilitary personnel die from heart attacks & illnesses in Naxal-affected areas’

New Delhi: At least 577 Indian paramilitary personnel have died from heart attacks and illnesses in Naxal-affected states of India over the last five years.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the BJP government Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai revealed this in the Parliament.

The minister said that the majority of these deaths, 297, were from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), followed by 108 from the Border Security Force (BSF), 76 from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), 74 from the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and 22 from the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB).

The data, spanning from 2019 to 2023, highlights the health risks faced by Indian paramilitary personnel in these regions.

Pertinently, the BJP-led Indian government has labeled certain communities, including tribal peoples, villagers, Dalits [formerly known as untouchables], and supporters of the Communist Party of India (Maoist), as Naxalites or Maoists. These groups are demanding justice and independent status, with significant influence in states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, and a growing presence beyond.
