New Delhi: Several people were detained by Delhi Police on Sunday outside Ladakh Bhawan, where climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has been on an indefinite hunger strike since October 6.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the protest aims to include Ladakh in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Protesters were taken to Mandir Marg police station.
Initially, police reported Wangchuk among the detainees, but Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Devesh Mahla later clarified that he was not.
“We have detained some students from outside Ladakh Bhawan. Sonam Wangchuk is not among them,” Mahla stated.
In a video message, Wangchuk criticized the detentions, questioning the permanent enforcement of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) in New Delhi, which prohibits unauthorized gatherings.
“Many came for a silent protest and were detained. It’s sad that in the world’s largest democracy, we can’t even hold a silent protest,” Wangchuk said. He called it a “blot on our democracy” and urged courts to address the issue.
Wangchuk also shared videos of the detentions on Instagram.
