Three women briefly detained for distributing Quran in Srinagar

Srinagar: Indian police detained three Muslim women in Srinagar district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir for distributing copies of the Quran and hijabs as part of a community initiative.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred in the Rajbagh area of the city when a group of young Kashmiri women launched a program aimed at providing Quran copies and hijabs to the public, in the lead-up to the holy month of Ramadan.

However, the program was interrupted by the police, who detained three members of the group. While the women were questioned and investigated, they were eventually released. The exact reasons for their detention remain unclear.

Meanwhile, Waheed Para, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, condemned the actions of the police, calling the detention unjust. In a series of posts on the social media platform X, Para criticized the police for detaining the women, pointing out that the Quran promotes principles of peace, justice, and a crime-free society.

He urged the Srinagar police not to pursue any legal action against the women and emphasized that their initiative was in line with the charitable spirit of Ramadan.

Social activist Dr. Raja Muzaffar Butt also condemned the arrest, calling it a severe violation of international law and the United Nations Charter, both of which guarantee religious freedom. Butt pointed out that the Quran advocates for justice and a society free of crime, and detaining these women for their peaceful religious activities contradicts these principles. He further warned that such actions by the Indian government could escalate tensions in Jammu and Kashmir, potentially undermining efforts for regional peace.
