Srinagar-Jammu Highway remains closed for 2nd day

Avalanches strike multiple locations in IIOJK

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), the Srinagar-Jammu Highway remains closed for the second consecutive day due to landslides and shooting stones at multiple locations.

According to Kashmir Media Service, hundreds of cars and trucks are stuck at different location along the highway. The closure has caused disruption and affected the transportation of essential commodities. Commuters are also facing problems due to closure of the highway.

The highway was closed on Friday due to snow accumulation between Ramsoo and Qazigund and shooting stones, landslides, and mudslides between Nashri and the NAVYUG Tunnel. Several vehicles, including trucks, passenger vehicles, and buses were halted at Jakhani in Udhampur.

Authorities have advised commuters to avoid traveling on the highway until clearance operations are completed.

In addition to the Srinagar-Jammu Highway, several other key roads, including the Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumri Road that connects Kashmir to Leh, Bhaderwah-Chamba Road, Mughal Road, and Sinthan Road, also remain closed due to snowfall and adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, multiple avalanches struck the Gulmarg area of Baramulla district. Officials stated that heavy snowfall triggered several snow slides and avalanches in Phase 1 of the Gulmarg area. However, no loss of life or property has been reported. Avalanches were also reported in Bandipora and Kishtwar districts.

Notably, IIOJK has been experiencing rainfall in the plains, while higher elevations are witnessing snowfall. The intense weather conditions have caused significant disruptions on road, rail and air travel, further worsening daily life and routine of the residents in the territory.
