IIOJK Assembly erupts in protest after BJP MLA’s disrespectful remarks on July 13 martyrs

Srinagar: The so-called Legislative Assembly of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir witnessed intense protests from both the Treasury Benches and the Kashmir Valley-based opposition after BJP MLA Sunil Sharma once again made disrespectful remarks about the martyrs of July 13, 1931, today.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the hullabaloo erupted during a discussion on the budget when National Conference (NC) MLA Showkat Hussain Ganie criticized the BJP for its actions in the territory in recent years and referenced 1947. As Ganie spoke, BJP MLA Sham Lal Sharma interrupted, asking him to talk about 1931. “They are our heroes,” responded NC MLA Altaf Kaloo in defense of the martyrs of July 13.

Sunil Sharma then countered by calling them “traitors,” sparking outrage among NC and other Kashmir-based members. The comments led to an uproar in the House, with CPI (M) leader Muhammad Yosouf Tarigami urging the Speaker to take immediate notice of Sharma’s remarks.

“Derogatory remarks were made against the martyrs of 1931. Maintain the decorum of the House. You are the true traitors,” Tarigami said, pointing at BJP legislators. MLA Langate Khursheed Sheikh also called for the expunging of Sharma’s remarks.

In the wake of the uproar, the Speaker intervened and expunged the offensive comments made by BJP MLA Sunil Sharma.

This incident follows a similar one few days back, when PDP MLA Waheed Parra sought the restoration of the public holiday for July 13, 1931. At that time, BJP leader Sunil Sharma objected, labeling the 22 Kashmiri Muslims martyred by Dogra forces not as martyrs, but as “traitors.”
