Mirwaiz condemns Bihar CM’s public veil-pulling incident, demands apology
Rejects misleading narratives on hijab

Srinagar: In Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, senior All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has strongly condemned Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for publicly pulling down the veil of a Muslim woman doctor during an official function, describing the act as a grave violation of personal dignity and moral boundaries.
According to Kashmir Media Service, addressing the Friday congregation at Srinagar’s historic Jamia Masjid, the Mirwaiz emphasized that when dignity is violated in public—particularly by someone in authority—it sends a deeply troubling message that power can override ethics and basic human values.
He expressed regret that instead of offering an apology, certain political parties and figures and sections of media are attempting to justify the act of the Bihar CM by mischaracterizing it as an issue of “women’s empowerment”, deliberately shifting the focus to the debate into the question of hijab. He termed such attempts mischievous and said they further expose the bigoted mindset of those indulging in it and their limited understanding of Islam.

Mirwaiz stressed that for Muslim women who observe hijab, it is a matter of faith, identity, and personal choice which has never been a barrier to education, professional excellence, or social contribution as is being deliberately implied to justify the Bihar CMs actions. He pointed out that women who observe hijab have, across the world made outstanding achievements in every sphere of life, proving that empowerment lies in equal opportunity and hard work not in the manner of dressing.
Mirwaiz demanded an apology from the Bihar CM to the woman for his inappropriate and disrespectful behavior. He also called on those indulging in ridiculous justifications to stop imposing ideological labels or justifying acts under the garb of so called “progress”.
