Trump places India under scrutiny over Russian oil imports
US monitoring committee on Indian oil policy sparks sovereignty concerns

Islamabad: In a new executive order, US President Donald Trump has placed India under intensified scrutiny over its crude oil imports from Russia, raising unprecedented concerns about foreign oversight of Indian policy decisions.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the directive states that India has committed to halt all direct and indirect imports of Russian oil, and that Washington will establish a monitoring mechanism to ensure compliance. The US committee, comprising senior officials from the Commerce and State departments, will track imports, review any potential violations, and issue recommendations—a move critics say encroaches on India’s sovereign energy policy.
The order also notes that India has also agreed to shift part of its energy purchases toward US suppliers, following pressure from Washington amid the ongoing crisis caused by Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Since 2022, Russia has been a major supplier of discounted crude to India, supporting the country’s refining sector and helping manage domestic fuel prices. The new commitment by the Modi government – outlined explicitly in Trump’s order – indicates that India has accepted external pressure to step back from that arrangement with Moscow.
The US monitoring committee marks a rare instance of American oversight directly tied to India’s energy sourcing decisions. It will oversee implementation of the oil-import prohibition and recommend actions on any violations, raising serious sovereignty concerns. Analysts warn that the order effectively subordinates Indian energy policy to US foreign policy objectives regarding Russia.
The new US-imposed restrictions threaten to complicate procurement, particularly through indirect channels, and signal a rare instance of American oversight directly influencing India’s domestic energy strategy.
This follows punitive 25% US tariffs on Indian goods in August 2025, imposed after New Delhi continued purchasing Russian crude. Experts say the latest order sets a troubling precedent, highlighting growing US influence over India’s strategic energy choices.
