Amnesty calls on India to respect right to peaceful protest in IIOJK

London: Amnesty International has urged Indian authorities to respect the right to peaceful protest in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, a right protected under both Indian and international law.
According to Kashmir Media Service, in a statement, Amnesty said, “When the government restricts protest for public order, the test is simple: are the measures protecting public order or is dissent being silenced. The right to peaceful protest in Srinagar and across the Kashmir valley must be respected and not suppressed.”
The Amnesty’s call comes in the wake of massive protests that erupted across occupied Jammu and Kashmir following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a joint US-Israeli strike in Tehran on Saturday. In order to thwart protests, Indian authorities imposed curfew-like restrictions and suspended internet services for several days, besides detaining nearly 800 youths, including some girls, from across IIOJK.
