BJP candidates rebel in IIOJK amidst public anger over special status revocation
Srinagar: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is facing unprecedented challenges in the disputed territory of occupied Jammu and Kashmir, as its candidates increasingly rebel against the party in view of stiff resistance from Kashmiri population.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the upcoming sham assembly elections have exposed the BJP’s vulnerability, with Kashmiris viewing the party as responsible for the revocation of the territory’s special status and the deprivation of their political rights.
In a significant development, BJP Ramban District Vice-President Suraj Singh Parihar has resigned from the party, choosing to contest as an independent candidate. This move is seen as a strategic attempt to distance himself from the party’s unpopular image and garner support in a territory where the BJP faces significant opposition.
Parihar’s decision is not an isolated incident, as several other BJP candidates have either surrendered their party tickets or resigned to contest independently. This exodus highlights the party’s struggles in navigating the complex political landscape of occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
Despite announcing a list of 16 candidates, the BJP is grappling with internal discontent and grievances. Party IIOJK President Ravinder Raina is attempting to address concerns and meet with party leaders and supporters to mitigate the situation. However, the desertion of candidates and internal unrest within the BJP underscores the party’s uphill battle in convincing voters and maintaining party unity in the disputed territory.
As the elections approach, the BJP’s challenges in the occupied territory are likely to intensify, with the party’s candidates facing stiff resistance from a population increasingly disillusioned with its policies.
