77 per cent women feel unsafe on buses after dark in Delhi: Greenpeace

New Delhi: Over 77 per cent of women feel unsafe commuting in Delhi buses after dark, even as the city government’s fare-free bus travel scheme has crossed the milestone of 100 crore ‘pink tickets’ issued to women, a report said.

According to Kashmir Media Service, in its latest report ‘Riding the Justice Route’, Greenpeace India, a non-governmental organization, said 77 per cent of the surveyed women have stated that they are not feeling safe in public transport.

The Greenpeace report revealed that, 23 per cent of the surveyed women have are thinking to change their use of public buses, saying more important for them is their safety and chastity.

The report also stated that government has failed to provide safe and comfortable transport where they remain comfortable and away from molestation. However, safety issues persist, with 77 per cent of women feeling unsafe on buses after dark, due to poor lighting and infrequent bus schedules, it pointed out.

Many women have also reported incidents of harassment, especially in overcrowded buses, it added.
