Writ petition filed in Bangladesh High Court seeking ban on Indian TV channels
Dhaka: A writ petition has been filed in the Bangladesh High Court calling for a ban on Indian TV channels, citing concerns about their impact on Bangladeshi culture and society.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the petition, filed by lawyer Ekhlas Uddin Bhuiyan, seeks a directive under the Cable Television Network Operation Act, 2006, to prohibit channels such as Star Jalsha, Star Plus, Zee Bangla, Republic Bangla, and others. It alleges that the content aired by these channels is provocative, unregulated, and undermines Bangladeshi cultural values, negatively influencing the country’s youth.
Respondents named in the petition include the Information and Home Ministries and the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). The case is expected to be heard by a bench comprising Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Sikder Mahmudur Razi.
The petition has been filed in view of the alleged instigation of the Hindu community by Indian channels in Bangladesh.
The High Court’s decision on the matter is awaited.
