Tightened clampdown imposed in Kashmir ahead of India’s Independence Day
Srinagar: The Indian government has imposed a sweeping lockdown across occupied Jammu & Kashmir ahead of its Independence Day on August 15.
According to Kashmir Media Service, heavy deployment of Indian forces has transformed the territory into a tightly-controlled military zone, deploying multi-tiered checkpoints, area domination exercises, heightened frisking, and extensive vehicle inspections across 20 districts, especially near border zones. Advanced surveillance technologies—including drones, high-resolution CCTV, and night-time security grids—have been activated to monitor sensitive locations and enforce the clampdown.
IGP Kashmir V.K. Birdi confirmed that comprehensive security and logistical arrangements are in place, with full-dress rehearsals conducted and senior officers coordinating tightly with paramilitary units to ensure “incident-free” celebrations.
Rights groups and local residents describe the measures as part of a broader stifling of dissent—pointing out that although official events proceed under the veneer of peace, the heavy securitisation reflects deep insecurity in the occupied territory, where anti-India sentiments prevail on August 15 as a symbol of resistance.
