Jailed Kashmiri politician Engineer Rashid seeks bail
New Delhi: Incarcerated Kashmiri politician Engineer Rashid, who won the recent parliamentary election from Baramulla constituency in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir, has applied for interim bail in a court in Delhi to take his oath as a Member of the Indian parliament.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Engineer Rashid ran as an independent candidate for the Baramulla seat and defeated National Conference candidate Omar Abdullah.
Engineer Rashid has been lodged in the Tihar Jail since August 9, 2019, when he was arrested by the India’s dreaded National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).
Additional Sessions Judge of Delhi’s Patiala House court, Chander Jit Singh has directed the NIA to respond to the bail application by Friday (today).
Engineer Rashid’s counsel Advocate Vikhyat Oberoi in a media interview said that an application seeking interim bail and alternative custody parole to take oath and perform other parliamentary functions was filed on Wednesday.
The matter was listed for June 6, but the NIA failed to file a reply, prompting the court to adjourn the hearing to June 7.
