MMU delegation to raise concerns over Waqf Amendment Bill in New Delhi

Srinagar: A delegation of the Mutahida Majlis-e-Ulema (MMU), a coalition of religious bodies in Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) led by Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, will meet Jagdambika Pal, chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on the Waqf Amendment Bill, in New Delhi tomorrow.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the delegation, including IIOJK’s Grand Mufti Nasir-ul-Islam, Maulana Rehmatullah, Aga Syed Hassan, Maulana Hami, Maulana Masroor Abbas, Maulana Al-Kindi and leaders from Kargil and Leh, aims to voice serious reservations about the proposed amendments, which they believe threaten the autonomy and purpose of Waqf properties.

In a statement issued in Srinagar, the MMU highlighted that the amendments could undermine the management of Waqf assets, reduce Muslim representation in governing bodies, and allow the Indian government to declassify protected properties, risking their misuse. These changes, the MMU argues, not only violate Muslim personal law but also exacerbate fears of marginalization within the Muslim community.

The MMU had previously written to Jagdambika Pal, emphasizing the need for meaningful dialogue. “Being a Muslim-majority region, IIOJK’s concerns must be addressed thoughtfully,” the Mirwaiz stated, warning that increased government control over Waqf institutions would constitute an unwarranted intrusion.

The contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, referred to the JPC last August after widespread criticism, has drawn opposition from various stakeholders, including the Indian Opposition. The committee is currently holding consultations with legal experts, Waqf Board members, and community leaders and is expected to submit its final report during the upcoming Budget Session of the Indian Parliament.
