Kashmir Solidarity Day: A day to stand for justice and freedom

Hamza Sudheer

Observed annually on February 5, Kashmir Solidarity Day serves as a reminder of the decades-long struggle of the Kashmiri people under Indian occupation. It is a day of political, moral and diplomatic commitment by Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir to the cause of Kashmir’s freedom. Through solidarity rallies, seminars and conferences, this day brings international attention to the unfulfilled aspirations of Kashmiris who have endured oppression, violence and the denial of their fundamental rights.

The Kashmir conflict traces back to the partition of British India in 1947. Despite United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, such as UNSCR 47 (1948) and UNSCR 122 (1957), which called for a plebiscite to determine the will of the Kashmiri people, India has consistently blocked this democratic process. For 77 years, the people of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) have faced brutal suppression as they strive for their right to self-determination.

Since 1989, the Indian military’s actions in IIOJK have led to appalling human rights violations. Approximately 96,000 Kashmiris have been killed, 23,000 women widowed, 11,250 women and girls raped and over 100,000 homes and schools destroyed. The militarization of the region, with an estimated 700,000 troops, makes Kashmir the most heavily militarized zone in the world. Following the revocation of Kashmir’s special status under Article 370 in August 2019, the situation has deteriorated further. A communication blackout, arrests of political leaders, human rights activists and journalists under false charges, as well as the deportation and mistreatment of detainees, have added to the suffering.

India’s introduction of domicile laws enabling non-Kashmiri Hindus to settle in the region represents a strategic demographic shift. Lacs of domiciles have so far been issued to non-residents, raising concerns of ethnic cleansing akin to Israel’s policy in Palestine. These actions aim to undermine Kashmir’s Muslim-majority identity and influence any future plebiscite.

Pakistan has consistently championed the Kashmiris’ cause on international platforms, highlighting India’s violations of UNSC resolutions and human rights. On Kashmir Solidarity Day, Pakistan reaffirms its unwavering support for the Kashmiri people through diplomatic initiatives, public rallies and media campaigns. Educational institutions engage students to create awareness about the significance of solidarity with Kashmir, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to justice and peace.

Institutions in Pakistan have been established to document and research the atrocities committed in IIOJK. By compiling evidence of human rights violations, these efforts aim to garner international support and pressure India to honor its commitments under international law. Pakistan’s efforts include organizing international seminars and publishing reports to counter India’s propaganda and expose the ground realities in IIOJK.

India’s actions in IIOJK are not just violations of the Kashmiris’ rights but also blatant breaches of international law. The use of pellet guns against children, harassment of Kashmiri leaders and targeting of civilians along the Line of Control (LoC) reflect a disregard for human dignity and international norms. The UNSC resolutions clearly state that the status of Kashmir cannot be unilaterally altered, yet India’s 2019 actions flagrantly violate these agreements.

The global community’s muted response emboldens India’s aggressive policies. Major powers, often prioritizing strategic and economic ties with India, have overlooked the plight of Kashmiris. This silence not only undermines the credibility of international institutions but also sets a dangerous precedent for ignoring human rights violations worldwide.

Kashmir Solidarity Day is a call for justice and humanity. It is an opportunity to remind the world of the urgent need for intervention. The international community must recognize that the Kashmir conflict is not just a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan but a humanitarian crisis that demands immediate attention. Concrete steps to address the Kashmir issue include mobilizing international organizations and human rights groups to pressure India into ending its oppressive policies, strengthening Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to highlight the issue at forums such as the United Nations, Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the European Parliament and amplifying the voices of Kashmiri activists and victims through global media campaigns to counter India’s narrative and reveal the harsh realities faced by Kashmiris in Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir.

Kashmir Solidarity Day symbolizes the resilience of the Kashmiri people and the unwavering support of Pakistan and its citizens. It is a day to honor the sacrifices made by Kashmiris in their pursuit of freedom and justice. More importantly, it is a reminder to the world of its moral obligation to stand against oppression and support the right of self-determination for the people of Kashmir. By uniting in solidarity, we reaffirm our commitment to a just and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir conflict, ensuring that the sacrifices of generations of Kashmiris do not go in vain.
