Kashmir resolution essential for lasting peace, stability in South Asia: Gillani

United Nations: Senate Chairman Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said that resolution of the Kashmir dispute in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions is essential for lasting peace and stability in South Asia.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, along with a high-level parliamentary delegation, was talking to President of the United Nations General Assembly Ms Annalina Baerbock at the United Nations Headquarters on the sidelines of the Annual IPU Parliamentary Hearing 2026.
He pointed out that despite the non-implementation of Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, India has unilaterally suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, further destabilizing the region. According to him, this move is a clear violation of the provisions of the treaty and the well-established principles of customary international law on transboundary water resources.
He said that such steps could have serious impacts on the lives and livelihoods of over 240 million Pakistanis and set dangerous precedents, especially at a time when climate stress and water scarcity demand mutual cooperation and strict adherence to international agreements.
Drawing the attention of the President of the General Assembly to the terrorist threats facing Pakistan, the Senate Chairman said that the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan, Balochistan Liberation Army, Al-Qaeda, ISIS-K and other terrorist organizations are using Afghan soil against Pakistan without any hindrance.
He emphasized that the people of Pakistan strongly support the mission of the United Nations to promote international peace and security, sustainable development and protect human rights.
He said in this era of multiple and interconnected global crises, the multilateral system is facing serious challenges, including persistent violations of the UN Charter and non-implementation of long-pending Security Council resolutions.
Pointing out the overall decline in adherence to international law and established legal norms, the Senate Chairman warned that these trends are weakening the global order.
On this occasion, General Assembly President Annalina Baerbock expressed her condolences to the government and people of Pakistan for the loss of precious lives in the recent terrorist incidents in Pakistan.
