India extends ban on ULFA for 5 years
New Delhi: The Indian government has extended the ban on the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) for five more years, citing the group’s continued efforts to secede Assam from India.
According to Kashmir Media Service, the ULFA was first banned in 1990, and the ban has been periodically extended since then.
The ULFA, as per notification issued by Indian home ministry, has been involved in various activities that are prejudicial to India’s sovereignty and integrity. These activities include intimidation, extortion, and maintaining links with other insurgent groups.
The ban extension comes despite a peace accord signed by the pro-talks faction of the ULFA with the central and Assam governments in December 2023.
