Prolonged power outages plague occupied Kashmir amid winter chill
Srinagar: Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir is enduring prolonged, unscheduled power outages as winter electricity demand climbs to 2200 MW, while supply remains at 1500 MW. The shortfall is attributed to the preferential transmission of power generated from the territory’s water resources to Indian states.
According to Kashmir Media Service, residents in metered areas face frequent cuts, putting vulnerable individuals relying on medical devices like oxygen concentrators at risk. Businesses, particularly small enterprises, are also reporting significant disruptions and financial losses due to erratic power supply.
Critics blame the siphoning of Kashmir’s electricity to outside of the territory and administrative inefficiencies for the worsening crisis in the territory.
