India’s political and military leadership rhetoric imperils South Asian stability

Islamabad: Indian leaders’ increasingly provocative rhetoric and baseless claims on Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) are exacerbating regional tensions and threatening South Asia’s fragile peace.

According to Kashmir Media Service, observers have warned that statements from ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and Indian Army reflect India’s growing threat to regional stability and underscore its disregard for international norms.

The political and military leadership in New Delhi has repeatedly issued irresponsible remarks on AJK, fueling tensions and escalating the risk of conflict. Hindutva-driven narratives and false claims, the observers argued, cannot alter the historical and legal facts surrounding the Kashmir dispute, which remains internationally recognized and governed by UN Security Council (UNSC) resolutions.

The observers particularly criticized Indian Vice-Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. NS Raja Subramani’s remarks on Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), asserting that his emphasis on “resolving the situation” and “ensuring full integration” exposes New Delhi’s colonial mindset and refusal to acknowledge Kashmir’s disputed status under international law. They contend that framing the territory’s repression as essential for achieving a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047 trivializes the Kashmiri people’s legitimate struggle for self-determination while ignoring India’s ongoing human rights abuses and violations of United Nations Security Council resolutions.

Experts further said that India’s strong-arm tactics in Indian Illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir aim to suppress the legitimate struggle for self-determination, a right enshrined in international law. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s muscular and undemocratic measures, rooted in the Hindutva ideology, are not only oppressing the people of IIOJK but also posing a serious threat to peace across South Asia.

India’s obstinate refusal to engage in dialogue on the Kashmir dispute, coupled with its violations of UNSC resolutions, has destabilized the region and risks spilling over into global security concerns. Modi must recognize that lasting peace in South Asia hinges on a just resolution of the Kashmir issue.

Pakistan, on the other hand, continues to advocate for dialogue and peaceful solutions to regional disputes. Islamabad has consistently alerted the international community to India’s destabilizing role in South Asia, urging global powers to pressure New Delhi to abandon its aggressive posturing and create conditions conducive to peace.

Since 1947, India’s policies have been a persistent roadblock to regional harmony. Its unilateral actions in occupied Jammu and Kashmir not only undermine the aspirations of the Kashmiri people but also endanger peace in the broader region. Pakistan is committed to peace and stability while calling for global intervention to curb India’s belligerent policies.

The observers urged international community to act decisively to address India’s destabilizing actions, ensuring a peaceful resolution to the Kashmir dispute and safeguarding the region from further escalation.
